ROW DTLA

Los Angeles, CA

project-2

As one piece of the development vision for the Arts District, ROW DTLA, the Produce Court, was conceived as a much-needed urban passageway and a space of respite in the dense fabric of Downtown LA.

Effectively a courtyard situated between two warehouse buildings off Alameda Street between 7th and 8th Streets, just steps from the city’s wholesale produce markets and not far from the Fashion District, ROW attracts new pedestrian traffic driven by forward-looking retail, dining establishments, newly conceived office space options, a gym, and a weekly green market in a part of the city where synergy among all these elements was required to make any one of them happen.

Elysian’s concept was premised on letting trees and densely planted openings in the hardscape encroach on the public space of circulation, providing generous shade and also encouraging alternative paths and meeting points that diversify and enhance the pedestrian experience. The introduction of oversized, wooden seating platforms perched at the edges of these planted openings in the hardscape make ROW an oasis in the midst of the otherwise timeworn and purpose-driven urban fabric.
